Secrecy and Grace

Leading up to the 2004 election, I kept saying, with an arguably plausible sense of optimism, "Secretary Powell, there is still time for redemption." Meaning, speak the truth before it's too late! He never did, of course, but the truth will someday make its stinky self known.
Anyway, one of his top aides, Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, just spoke out (a year late) about the decision-making process in the White House. The word "cabal" is used generously...

Just to show you how fair and balanced I am, I got in an argument with my New Yorker friends last year during the GOP's RNC invasion. Someone had a T-shirt with a picture of Abe Lincoln with the caption reading "Last good Republican President". I reacted indignantly. No, that's not true (and not going to persuade any Republicans to take a new perspective). My answer was, "Eisenhower." No, not Reagan, who did great damage, or Ford, who was innocuous at best. Eisenhower was actually a damn good leader. He is responsible for making the expression "military-industrial complex" a household word. Not some screaming lefty in camouflage and a beret, or an obscure academic in tweed.
This guy thinks President Herbert (George the Elder) is awesome, which will hopefully get GOPers to at least not dismiss him immediately... Actually, he disses FDR and Lincoln in a way you don't hear very often.
Most of what I'm writing is parenthetical. That's my specialty. My point being, if you are ACTUALLY a conservative (as well as Progressive or whatever), you will take umbrage with the Bush Administration's actions. So listen:
